Magnificently Supreme

It seems that music has been especially ruminating in my thoughts lately. As I was pondering passages in the book of Hebrews the lyrics to a particular song I heard years ago came to mind:

So great a salvation, so costly the gift
So great a redemption that the dying might live
So great a salvation, so high the price,
So kind a Redeemer, supreme sacrifice,
Great is your love, great is your love

-David & Becky Durham

As the book of Hebrews unfolds a predominant message that jumps from the pages of Scripture is that the Son of God, Jesus the Christ, is Supreme. Supreme in what? Supreme in all of his nature, position and personhood to be counted the perfect sacrifice for our sin. It is a reality that Christians hear over and over again in church, Lord willing. Perhaps a truth to which our minds and hearts become numb; one of those realities that we hear and quickly think, "yes, I know that, move on." However, I am reminded that this reality should never become trivial or mundane to the life of the Believer for it is the pillar of the confession which demonstrates true salvation. Time and time again the writer of Hebrews exhorts us to "hold fast" to our confession to the end. What confession? That Jesus, in His supremacy, is the only one qualified to serve as the perfect, adequate sacrifice for sin. All other attempts for salvation are futile. Our confession of His supremacy to accomplish salvation, not only in general, but in our own life is what we WILL hold to until the very end if we are truly saved!! Oh Father, grant to us tender hearts and yearnings to understand the supremacy of Christ more and more that our confession will not be meager but will boldly proclaim that Christ alone is our High Priest who is "holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens."
